Sri Maha Vishnu’s purpose of dashavatars

god vishnu dashavatar This Dashavataar is a small bit of the full story of Dashavataar. I am telling you soon about 10 avatars and 10 parts.

god vishnu dashavatar

Lord Maha Vishnu takes any form and assumes any number of avatars for the sake of His devotees and the preservation of this creation.

In this infinite universe, even before the birth of this earthly world, Lord Shiva created Brahma and Vishnu and entrusted both of them with their duties. Hence, they are called the Trimurti.

  • Brahma is the creator. He writes the destiny of every being, deciding how each life should begin and how it should unfold.

  • Vishnu is the preserver. He exists to protect His devotees, to safeguard the world, and to uphold Dharma.

  • Shiva is the transformer. He grants boons to all and governs the worlds with His divine energy.

That is why, whenever we read the Puranas, these three divine beings are always present. Yet, in this creation, good and evil coexist. Some people wonder, “If God created this world, shouldn’t He stop evil altogether?”

The answer lies in the words of Lord Maha Vishnu Himself, in His Krishna Avatar:

Every living being must experience the results of their own karma, whether good or bad.

This is why, irrespective of religion, anyone who reads the Bhagavad Gita at least once will find answers to all their questions about life.

What is an Avatar?

An avatar means a divine incarnation, a form that Lord Vishnu takes whenever there is a great danger or imbalance in the universe. He descends to protect creation and to restore Dharma in a form that suits the situation.

Example – The Rama Avatar

In Treta Yuga, Lord Vishnu incarnated as Rama. Why? Only to destroy the demon king Ravana.

Ravana’s ambition was selfish. He wanted to place the entire world under his control, defeat the gods, and rule the universe. To end this tyranny, Lord Vishnu descended as Rama and killed Ravana.

The purpose of the Rama Avatar was thus to protect the world by eliminating Ravana. At the same time, Rama’s life stands as a great example of upholding Dharma. Though Vali was stronger, Rama chose to support Sugriva because Sugriva stood for righteousness.

The Ramayana, therefore, is not just a story but a perfect example of how an avatar of Lord Vishnu always protects Dharma and supports those who live by it.

1. Matsya Avatar (Fish Form)

In Satya Yuga, there lived a demon named Hayagriva. He obtained a boon from Lord Shiva that no god could kill him. With this arrogance, he went to Lord Brahma. While Brahma was resting, the demon Hayagriva stole the Vedas from him. After stealing them, he hid the Vedas inside a cave in the underworld (Patala).

Without the Vedas, the world would have no knowledge, no rituals, and no solutions to problems.

Meanwhile, Lord Vishnu foresaw a great deluge (pralaya) that would soon cover the entire earth with water. To protect the world, He took birth in the hands of King Satyavrata and transformed into a giant fish (Matsya). When the deluge flooded the earth, Vishnu as Matsya saved King Satyavrata and the devotees, protecting them from destruction.

Later, in His fish form, Lord Vishnu fought a fierce battle with the demon Hayagriva, killed him, and recovered the stolen Vedas. He then returned the Vedas safely to Lord Brahma.

2. Kurma Avatar (Tortoise Form)

Once upon a time, the Devas (gods) and Asuras (demons) decided that they wanted to obtain the Amrita, the nectar of immortality. However, they faced a big problem: the Amrita was hidden in the Ksheera Sagara, the ocean of milk.

To extract the Amrita, they had to churn the Ksheera Sagara. For this, they used Vasuki, the serpent, as a rope, and the Mandara Mountain as the churning rod. But when they placed the Mandara Mountain in the ocean, it began to sink.

In this crisis, the Devas and Asuras approached Brahma for guidance. Brahma advised them to go to Lord Maha Vishnu.

Upon their request, Lord Maha Vishnu took the form of a tortoise, the Kurma Avatar. “Kurma” means tortoise. In this form, He supported the Mandara Mountain on His back, acting as a stable base.

Using the mountain as a pivot, the Devas and Asuras were able to churn the ocean. During the churning, Halahala poison emerged. Lord Shiva contained the poison in His throat to save the world, which is why He is called Neelakantha, the blue-throated one.

3. Varaha Avatar

There was a demon named Hiranyaksha who wanted to bring the entire world under his control. He attacked Bhudevi (Mother Earth) and dragged her into the depths of the ocean.

The Devas, unable to stop him, approached Brahma and informed him of this crisis. Upon hearing this, Lord Maha Vishnu immediately took the form of a boar, the Varaha Avatar.

In this powerful form, Vishnu plunged into the ocean and fought a fierce battle with the demon Hiranyaksha. He ultimately killed the demon and lifted Bhudevi out of the ocean, restoring her safely to the earth.

4. Narasimha Avatar (Man-Lion Form)

One of the most powerful avatars of Lord Maha Vishnu is the Narasimha Avatar. There was a demon named Hiranyakashipu, who had a son named Prahlada. From birth, Prahlada was a great devotee of Lord Vishnu.

Hiranyakashipu, however, could not tolerate his son’s devotion. Despite repeatedly warning him, Prahlada remained devoted to Vishnu. Hiranyakashipu tried many times to kill his own son, but each time, Lord Vishnu protected Prahlada.

Unable to bear his son’s devotion and persistence, Hiranyakashipu continued his attempts to kill Prahlada. At this point, Lord Vishnu assumed the Narasimha Avatar, a form that was half-man and half-lion. In this fierce form, Vishnu killed Hiranyakashipu and saved Prahlada, upholding Dharma.

5. Vamana Avatar (Dwarf Form) god vishnu dashavatar

There was a great emperor named Bali Chakravarti, who, empowered by a boon, tried to assert his dominance over the Earth and the three worlds. To restore cosmic balance, Lord Maha Vishnu incarnated as a dwarf, known as Vamana.

Vamana approached Bali during a sacrificial ritual and politely asked for three steps of land. Bali, being generous, agreed and said Vamana could place the steps wherever he wished.

Then, Vamana expanded His form immensely:

  • The first step covered the entire Earth.

  • The second step spanned the heavens.

  • For the third step, Bali offered his own head, and Vamana placed it there.

Thus, Lord Vishnu reclaimed the universe while honoring Bali’s devotion and generosity, demonstrating the power of divine wisdom and cosmic order.

6. Parashurama Avatar god vishnu dashavatar

Once upon a time, the Kshatriya kings were torturing ordinary people, sages, and Brahmins, subjecting them to cruel punishments and looting them unjustly. At that time, Lord Maha Vishnu was born as Parashurama, the son of Sage Jamadagni.

Parashurama always carried an axe in his hand, and that is how he got his name.

One day, Kartavirya Arjuna, a powerful king with demonic qualities, came to Sage Jamadagni’s hermitage and asked for the divine cow Kamadhenu. When the sage refused, Kartavirya Arjuna forcefully took it away. Unable to bear this injustice, Parashurama killed Kartavirya Arjuna.

In the same way, he destroyed the corrupt Kshatriyas twenty-one times and re-established Dharma.

7. Rama avatar god vishnu dashavatar

The incarnation of Lord Rama is one of the greatest and most beloved avatars. It came for the protection of Dharma and for the destruction of Ravana.

Ravana, a mighty demon, performed severe penance to Lord Shiva and asked for the boon of immortality. But Lord Shiva granted him a boon, saying, “You cannot be killed by anyone except a human.” Ravana thought humans were too weak to defeat him and took pride in that boon.

With this arrogance, he stopped sages and gods from performing their worship and rituals, and he waged war against them, believing that no one could kill him.

Then all the gods went to Lord Brahma, and upon hearing their plea, Lord Maha Vishnu incarnated as the eldest son of King Dasharatha, who was performing a sacred yajna for children.

With the help of Sugriva and Hanuman, Rama went to Lanka and killed Ravana, thus restoring Dharma.

8. sri krishna avatar god vishnu dashavatar

Sri Krishna incarnated to establish Dharma. He is the eighth avatar of Lord Maha Vishnu, also known as Sri Krishna Avataram. Some also say that Balarama is considered an avatar.

Sri Krishna was born to Devaki and Vasudeva. But since Devaki’s brother Kamsa had a curse that Devaki’s child would kill him, Kamsa imprisoned them. On the night of Krishna’s birth, Vasudeva carried baby Krishna across the river Yamuna and left him safely with Yashoda and Nanda.

From childhood, Krishna performed many miracles and killed several demons. When Indra sent heavy rains, Krishna lifted the Govardhana Hill to protect the cows and the people. Later, he killed Kamsa, freeing the people and rescuing his parents.

As the charioteer of Arjuna, Krishna guided him in the battle of Kurukshetra, teaching the Bhagavad Gita, where he revealed the essence of Dharma and Karma to the entire world.

9. Buddha avatar god vishnu dashavatar

Sri Maha Vishnu’s ninth avatar is the Buddha Avatar.

He incarnated to guide people on the path of peace, non-violence, and Dharma.

The main purpose of the Buddha Avatar was to lead humanity away from cruelty, selfishness, and violence and towards truth, compassion, and peace.

Once, Buddha spent a night in a cremation ground to show people that they need not fear ghosts or spirits, proving that there is nothing to be afraid of.

10. Kalki Avataaram, the god Vishnu dashavatar

The Kalki Avatar is yet to come.

This avatar will appear to destroy Kali, the demon who represents the influence of evil in the world. In every good deed, Kali secretly tries to lead people astray and push them toward wrong paths.

In the Kalki Avatar, Sri Maha Vishnu will come riding a white horse, destroy Kali, and eliminate the influence of evil, restoring Dharma and righteousness.
